I was gone for a year, i was inactive because of my exam year. But im back !
Oh my God this scene is great. FINALLY A CONTEXTUALIZATION OF LOKI’S LINE “IT WILL BE EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF.”
This scene puts a whole new twist on Loki’s form of totalitarianism. He’s not just a neo-fascist, actually in a way some of the things he says contradict that very assertion and swing to the opposite pole of the political spectrum.
Do not get me started.
Never mind I can’t help myself….here we go.
So Loki believes (based on personal experience, based on scrambling to measure up to his brother in his father’s eyes resulting in nothing but further personal pain) that agency and ego are a lie created to console lesser beings. This we already know from his deranged rants in the actual final film. But there’s more here.
What is the false consolation, in Loki’s eyes? What is the lie, to the embittered master liesmith? It’s twofold. It’s a false construct connoting that a) the individual can obtain notoriety and therefore self-fulfillment, and b) the individual is noble and heroic, has “spirit,” when in reality individualism is merely a form of the truth: that all living things are inherently selfish.
Loki sees himself as a savior to these people not only because on some level they “crave” the safety of “subjugation,” but ALSO BECAUSE HUMANS ARE A “LOST PEOPLE” WHO GIVE IN TO THE BASEST URGE OF ALL: SELFISHNESS AND SELF-PRESERVATION, AND HE SOMEHOW IN SOME WARPED WAY THINKS HE WILL RESCUE THEM FROM THEIR SELFISHNESS WITH “UNMERCIFUL” CORRECTIONAL MEASURES, BY TURNING THEM INTO A COLLECTIVE, A CONGLOMERATE PSYCHE, A BUNCH OF DRONES, THAT HE CONTROLS!
Does this not FLOOR anyone else?!
Loki thinks he can MORALLY CORRECT the human race’s selfishness, that he an ERADICATE IT, by being the AUTHORITARIAN PARENT-KING of the human race. Not only does this show how Loki has internalized notions of Odin’s parenting (and also pathologized it as “unmerciful”) it also shows that Loki thinks of himself AS some kind of parent.
This is not unique in the most atrocious moments of human history, so to me it’s clever that it was infused into this character. Stalin thought of himself as the father of his communist regime, for instance. It’s fascinating that Loki falls into this category. He’s like the mother or father of the “lost” humans. He constantly refers to his enemies and would-be underlings as “lost creatures,” like he sees himself as some kind of Fagin from Oliver Twist taking in the ragamuffins and errant souls left behind by the “heroes.” He sees himself as a Byronic anti-hero or something (“Every villain is a hero in his own mind,” Tom Hiddleston).
It’s really fascinating to me because so often (I even saw it on my dash today) Loki fans write Loki off as a Machiavellian post-ideological character above the “banalities” of the dichotomy “good” vs. “evil,” and in MANY ways that’s VERY TRUE. But at moments like this, it’s clear Loki’s particular breed of insanity is that which equates him with a persecuted hero of the “lost” who will seek to enlighten and improve upon their ethical code.
Once again the only thing we can be sure about with Loki is that he’s self-contradictory.
It’s amazing to me how much comes out of these few cut lines! My GOD.
Does anyone get what I’m rambling about here? At all?
